Scholarships and Czech Studies Endowment
The Czech Language program at the University of Washington is again offering the Early Fall in Prague study abroad program, and the CCEC will again offer merit-based scholarships for deserving students in support of the program. We have been thrilled at the support that the scholarship program has received from the community in the past, we are proud of all of our past scholarship recipients, and we expect this year’s group of applicants to be equally outstanding.
This is, however, a very important time for the program, and for higher education in general. As we all know, the current economic situation presents a severe economic challenge for federal, state and local budgets, and education is not spared the need for budget reductions. While there is federal stimulus money becoming available, these funds are largely designated for the sciences — not for programs such as the Czech program, Slavic Languages, or Russian, East European and Central Asian Studies (REECAS). These programs are equally important in scope, in the benefit they bring to the international community, and in helping to promote and facilitate the exchange of knowledge and ideas across borders.
That makes the work that we do as an organization, and as a community, significantly more important. As the budget landscape for education changes, the role that organizations such as the CCEC can play, and needs to play, greatly increases. It is our steadfast desire to continue to support these critical programs, to continue to support a language program that has been offered since the 1930s, and to continue to support those individuals and groups that wish to foster the exchange of ideas. We therefore have set a goal of not only providing scholarships for this year’s Early Fall in Prague program, as we have always done, but also of completing funding this year of the permanent Czech Studies Endowment at the University of Washington, so that students interested in this important part of the world will always have opportunities to study available to them.
That is where you can help. While the goals may sound lofty, they can easily be reached by combining the contributions of many. What may seem like a small amount can truly make a huge difference in our efforts. To help support our efforts, please visit the support page and click on the “donate now” button. The CCEC is a 501(c)3 organization, and all contributions are tax-deductible. Your support is, as always, greatly valued and appreciated.
